Drive Less, See More
Experience the journey too - Drive less, See more.
The best way to discover The Lake District’s true character; the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside, is to get out there and explore! We’ve provided information on greener travel options for each one of our experiences, so why not make your journey a part of the experience too. Enjoy the scenery from an open top bus or get closer to nature on your bike. Leave the car behind and you’ll discover many more ways to explore The Lake District.
Promoting sustainable transport is what the 'Drive Less, See More' Campaign is all about, but we also want to celebrate the many things there are to see and do in The Lakes that are free! And it's not just about the fantastic walks around the countryside; there's plenty of wildlife to be seen, bouldering, den-building, swimming, and idyllic picnic locations to enjoy.
There are some great new bus and boat services, making it even easier to get around without a car. Try the X33 Lakeland Explorer and stop at Yew Tree Tarn for walks around Tarn Hows (NT). Hop on the 800 Bike Bus which runs from Ambleside down the East shore of Windermere and calls at Fell Foot Park (NT). The Bike Boat runs from The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole to Wray Castle (NT), take your bike for great day out. The X30 bus connects Grizedale and Wray Castle with Hawkshead, here you can visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery (NT).
